Thumb Pick

Is it ok to use a guitar thumb pick for strumming?
I like to strum my guitar and sing along to old classic rock songs (CCR, Simon & Garfunkle etc…). I always use a thumb pick when I strum because I find it easier and I don’t have to worry about dropping it, but another guitarist told me the other day that I shouldn’t use a guitar thumb pick unless I was playing fingerstyle. Is there a reason I shouldn’t use a thumb pick?
It is absolutely ok to use thumb picks for strumming your guitar! I do it all the time! Check out guys like Tommy Emmanuel, Don Ross, Michael Hedges… They all make interesting use of the thumb pick that goes outside the realm of standard fingerstyle! If you’d like to learn some more about fingerstyle and thumb-picking in general check out this great site on thumb picks and finger style: http://www.thumb-picks.com
Also keep this in mind, when it comes to guitar, if it feels good and sounds good, keep doing it!
