light or heavy gauge strings for acoustic guitar?
which do u prefer? (taking account the type of music u play, what sound you like out of it, and the difference between other gauges)
feel free to explain some things about strings and brands.
i’m gonna start testing out different strings to see which ones i like best and i need feedback.
thanks!
unless you have a very good Martin or Taylor guitar
you do NOT want to put heavy gauge strings on it
(unless you are using a drop tuning)
most guitars are NOT built well enuff to take the tension from heavy gauge strings
the top will pull up
and the bridge will probably come off
lites or mediums are best for most guitars
lites play better, bend easier
mediums sound better, last longer
edit
ask any music store with a guitar tech,
they will tell you to NOT put heavy gauge on an inexpensive acoustic guitar, they are NOT built for the heavy tension
mediums are OK, but NOT heavy gauge, on most inexpensive acoustics
lights are considered 12-54
mediums are 13-56
heavies start at 14, and many string companies don’t even make them anymore (so few guitars can handle them, not much demand)
I went through the whole Martin string and catalogue, and could not find one set of heavy gauge strings
Elixir strings does not have a single heavy gauge string for a normal 6 string guitar either
most resonator guitars have a large block neck, and are made for heavy guage.
