Excellent Master
Hitchcock: his greatest, and why?
Of all things, I am a Hitchcock fan. I love his psychological mysteries more than his espionage movies, though ‘Torn Curtain’ was pretty good. In his movies I like to look for the key elements of a twist-turning thriller, which Hitchcock was an excellent master at crafting. In my opinion his ultimate best has to be between ‘Psycho’ and ‘Rebecca’, though I am leaning more towards ‘Psycho’. Which movie(s) do you think was his greatest, and why?
Wow! How can you pick just one? That is HARD. For sheer entertainment, you can’t beat “North by Northwest”. The chemistry between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint is unbelievable, the wide-ranging scope, the suspense and humor!
Then there is “Strangers on a Train” with such great performances and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. “Rope” is outstanding for its acting and the briliiant staging all shot in ONE APARTMENT!
But, I gotta go with “Rear Window” – it’s got the trademark humor, the variety of characters, great Jimmy Stewart, and you really DO get lost in the story, did Raymond Burr do it or not? You don’t know until the final scenes.
